Guitar set-ups and Maintenance

Every guitar needs a few adjustments from time to time, just to ensure optimal playability.

• A basic set-up involves giving the instrument a good clean, changing the strings and checking the string height and intonation.  If the strings are high the instrument may need adjustment to the truss rod and /or the bridge saddles and the nut.
• Often the fingerboard and frets will need to be cleaned and polished.  A smooth hydrated fret board feels much nicer under the fingers and string bends are much easier to accomplish 
• Some guitars have very uneven frets and this can lead to string buzz or notes choking out.  Depending on the severity of the problem individual frets can be spot-levelled or all of the frets can be levelled, re-crowned and polished.
• Loose wires or dirty switches and potentiometers can cause crackling noises, or intermittent loss of sound.  These need to be cleaned with a suitable electrical cleaner and failing connections can be resoldered.
